Anthurium is famous for its long blooming and is reputed to be the world's longest flowering plant. Anthurium has large, glossy deep green leaves. Some varieties may have variegated or darker leaves. Even without flowers, it makes an attractive indoor plant. However, it is its 'flowers' that draw attention. These are not, in fact, true flowers! The large coloured leaf-like part is known as the spathe. The flowers themselves are very small and insignificant, and develop on the central yellow or cream 'spear' known as the spadix. Other plants with similar flowers include the peace lily (Spathiphyllum) and calla lily (Zantedeschia).
Anthurium species can grow terrestrially or as epiphytes on other plants. The inflorescence, commonly called the flower, consists of a colourful shiny leathery spathe surrounding or subtending a central rodlike spadix that bears numerous tiny bisexual flowers. The leaves are somewhat leathery and variable in shape.
The “flowers” of the Anthurium are some of the longest-lasting on earth, which means that dazzling colour will last in your home for months. The Anthurium symbolises hospitality with its open heart-shaped flower and inspires happiness and abundance.
Poinsettias aren’t always red. The plant is grown in more than 100 varieties including shades of white, cream, pink, purple, orange and yellow. There are also marble and bi-colour varieties. The showy, colourful part of the poinsettia isn’t a flower – it’s a modified leaf. The poinsettia’s modified leaves (called bracts) are often mistaken for the flower. Actually, the small yellow flowers (called cyathium) can be found clustered in the centre of the bracts.
Poinsettias need both sunshine and dark nights to bloom. The shorter days and longer nights of late fall and early winter are what cause poinsettias to bloom this time of year. If they are planted near artificial light, such as a streetlamp, it disrupts their blooming cycle.
Poinsettias can grow up to 15 feet tall. In their native tropical environment in Mexico and Central America, poinsettias are a perennial woody shrub that grows as high as 10 to 15 feet tall – more like a small tree than a houseplant.
